The first step toward being qualified to be hired and
eligible for a three year temporary certificate is to have earned a
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited college/university. If
you have foreign transcripts, they must be evaluated by an approved
credential evaluation agency. Please follow this link for approved
credentialing authority information -
www.fldoe.org/edcert/ApprovedCredential.asp.
-
Next, you must take the subject area test in the
subject area in which you wish to teach (Elementary Ed. K-6, Music, Math,
English, etc). Please go to this website to register -
www.fl.nesinc.com. You can
download the study guide from this website. Alternately, you
may obtain the study guides from Barnes & Noble or
order at www.Xamonline.com.
-
Once you pass the subject area test,
apply to the Department of Education for that subject area(s) at
www.fldoe.org/edcert/apply.asp. Be sure to send official
transcripts with your degree.
-
The Department of Education will then send you a
Statement of Eligibility letter stating that you are eligible for
the three year non-renewable Temporary Certificate. You may be
eligible to teach while completing the requirements stated on the
Statement of Eligibility. Brevard Public Schools district
personnel will advise you of any additional requirements for
employment in our school district and compliance with the federal No
Child Left Behind Act.
-
The statement of
eligibility will list the requirements to be completed while you hold
the three year non-renewable Temporary Certificate in order to
receive a five year renewable Professional Certificate. Some of the
requirements will include the following and must be completed by May
1st of the year your certificate expires (except for the General
Knowledge Test):
-
Passing score on the general knowledge test
(Math, Reading, Essay and English) (by May 1st of the year hired).
-
Passing score on the professional education test
(by May 1st of your temporary certificate expiring).
-
Completion of the new teacher induction program
(completed by the Administrator).
-
One year of full-time teaching experience.
-
Education courses may be required. The
Florida Department of Education will make this determination
based upon review of your official transcript. An
additional 18 credit hours (+/-) may be needed and must be
completed by May 1st of the year your Temporary
Certificate expires.
Once you receive your Statement of
Eligibility letter from the Department of Education, you can choose which alternative program (Brevard Public School/ACP,
University of Central, Florida Tech, or other college route [University
of Phoenix, Florida Southern, etc.]) you wish to consider.
You must have a completed
employment application on file www.brevardschools.org (BEACON) to apply
for available positions in your area of certification.
